10 Daily Rituals to Inspire Productivity and Peace of Mind
Here at Studio Badu, ritual is everything: in our work, in our self-care practises, and in how we structure our days. While the ancient concept of ritual may be tied to sacral symbolism, to us, ritual is all about making day-to-day routines more pleasurable than they are a chore. Here are a few of our favourites:
1. Wake up well
Set your alarm each day for the same time, and refrain from pressing the snooze button. Instead, turn off your alarm, place your hands on your stomach and practise ten deep belly breaths, counting slowly to five as you breathe in and slowly to eight as you breathe out. This daily practise keeps the parasympathetic nervous system in check and clears your mind for the day ahead.
2. Get your morning move on
The benefits of pre-work exercise have been proven time and time again to increase productivity, improve mood and counteract the sedentary lifestyle that desk-workers lead. 3-5 times a week, set your gym kit out the night before, and make it the first thing you do after rising (or at least after your coffee). You won’t regret it.
3. Schedule in regular breaks
While it may sound counter-intuitive, regular breaks are key to ongoing productivity. Every hour, get up from your desk, stretch, drink a glass of water and practise some deep breathing or a few minutes of relaxation. Whatever you do, make sure you set an alarm for 10 minutes, so when the time is up, you can resume where you left off.
4. Stay hydrated
Did you know that dehydration negatively affects the brain? Keep your brain active and sharp with regular consumption of water and herbal teas throughout the day. We like to keep a large steel water bottle next to us at all times to help us do so. Try adding lemon, cucumber or berries to yours for a natural vitamin hit that will help to perk you up.
5. Fuel up
Whether you’re an all-day grazer or a mealtime maven, it’s important that you keep yourself fuelled up with healthy meals and snacks that don’t negatively affect your energy levels (we’re looking at you, chocolate brownies). Be sure to keep your choice of healthy snacks and meals on hand at all times, to stave off those pesky vending machine munchies.
Whether you love it, or you hate it, you can’t deny the benefits that regular meditation has on both the mind and the body. The great thing about meditation is that every little bit counts. Spend a few minutes pre and post work listening to a meditation app to help you tune in and out of your working day. We love Mystic, Headspace or Calm for our daily fix.
7. Make your workspace your happy place
If you’re one of the many who feels that their workspace correlates with their mental state, then we feel you. When it comes to making your workspace your happy place, simple daily practices can make all the difference. Invest in a small bunch of flowers each week, water your plants, light a candle or some incense, or showcase your favourite daily visual inspiration on a rolling mood-board – because at the end of the day, a lively environment is a joyous one.
8. Legs up the wall
Running your own business can summon more anxiety than the normal 9-5. Which is why it’s essential to engage in daily practises that regulate your cortisol levels and help to minimise stress levels. Try placing your legs up the wall for 10 minutes per day. This is a wonderful way to lower cortisol levels and give your body and mind a well-deserved time out.
9. Plan out your day
You’ve heard it time and time again, but the adage runs true – fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Each morning plan out your tasks for the day ahead using an app like Trello or Asana. More than anything, this helps to keep us on track and ensure we meet those looming deadlines, every time.
10. Set rules around screen time
We all know how hard it can be to clock out for the day, especially as an entrepreneur, however being strict with this one encourages sustainable day-to-day productivity and helps to ward off the dreaded burn out. Set a time each day to close your laptop, and don’t open it again until the morning. Instead, spend your evenings preparing a nourishing meal with loved ones, write in your journal or wind down with a good book. Believe us, your body and brain will thank you for it.
